Overview

Located in the Rift Valley Province, the Samburu National Reserve is approximately 350km away from Nairobi. This reserve is traversed by the Uaso Nyiro river, creating a magnet for a diverse population of Kenyan animals. The river teems with life, particularly a significant population of Nile crocodiles. The reserve's landscape predominantly features open savannah, adorned with clusters of acacia trees, forests, thorn trees, and grassland vegetation. Notably, it holds historical significance as one of the two areas where conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness.

Tour Schedule

Day 1: Arrival & First Game Drive

Morning:

  • Arrival at Samburu National Reserve
    Fly into Samburu Airstrip (or drive, if you're up for a longer road trip). Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your lodge or tented camp, such as Samburu Intrepids or Saruni Samburu, where you’ll check-in and be welcomed with a refreshing drink.

Lunch:

  • Relax and enjoy lunch at your accommodation. Samburu lodges usually offer a variety of delicious local and international dishes.

Afternoon:

  • First Game Drive
    After lunch, embark on your first game drive in Samburu National Reserve. This area is known for its unique species such as the Grevy’s zebrareticulated giraffeSomali ostrich, and Beisa oryx. You'll also have opportunities to spot elephants, lions, cheetahs, and leopards, as well as a variety of birdlife.

Evening:

  • Return to the lodge or camp for dinner. Afterward, you can enjoy the peace of the African evening, often with a campfire or some Maasai storytelling under the stars.

Overnight:

  • Stay overnight at your lodge or tented camp.

Day 2: Full Day Game Drive & Cultural Experience

Early Morning:

  • Morning Game Drive
    Start early with a game drive at sunrise. Samburu is best experienced early in the morning when wildlife is most active. You’ll likely see lions, elephants, and various antelope species. The early morning light also provides perfect conditions for photography.

Breakfast:

  • Enjoy breakfast back at the lodge or with a scenic picnic in the bush during your game drive.

Mid-Morning:

  • Continue your game drive, covering more of the reserve’s unique terrain. The dry riverbeds and lush areas near the Ewaso Nyiro River are hotspots for wildlife sightings. Keep an eye out for rare species like the Samburu Special Five (Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx, and gerenuk).

Lunch:

  • Head back to your camp or lodge for a lunch break and a chance to relax.

Afternoon:

  • Cultural Visit to Samburu Village
    After lunch, visit a nearby Samburu village to experience the rich culture of the Samburu people. Learn about their traditional ways of life, including their distinctive dress, music, and customs. This visit gives you a deep cultural connection to the area, enriching your overall experience.

Evening:

  • Evening Game Drive
    Head out again for a late afternoon/evening game drive. The golden hour just before sunset offers excellent opportunities to spot predators as they start hunting, or animals like elephants and giraffes grazing in the cooler temperatures.

Dinner & Overnight:

  • Return to the lodge for a delicious dinner, and enjoy the ambiance of the African bush at night.

Day 3: Morning Game Drive & Departure

Early Morning:

  • Final Game Drive
    Start the day early with one last game drive. Use this time to explore any parts of the reserve you might have missed or revisit spots where you’ve had good wildlife sightings. You may encounter lions, buffalo, or even a rare sighting of a leopard if you’re lucky.

Breakfast:

  • Enjoy breakfast back at the lodge or out in the bush during your game drive.

Mid-Morning:

  • Relax & Enjoy the Surroundings
    After your game drive, enjoy some free time to relax, take a nature walk (if available), or simply unwind at the lodge. Many lodges offer spa treatments, so you might opt for a rejuvenating massage after the excitement of the past days.

Lunch:

  • Have lunch at the lodge and prepare for your departure.

Afternoon:

  • Transfer to Samburu Airstrip for your flight back to Nairobi or onward destination.
